In article are considered history of scientific ideas about quality of a life of the population. The basic directions of research of domestic and foreign scientists about quality of a life from the point of view of optimistic and pessimistic approaches are given. Interdisciplinary character of researches of quality of a life of the population is underlined. The research urgency admits this area for social and economic development of Russia.
